چکیده

Despite the pre-Swift expectation that bright optical flashes from reverse shocks would be prevalent in early-time afterglow emission, rapid response observations show this not to be the case. Although very bright at early times, some GRBs such as GRB 061007 and GRB 060418, lack the short-lived optical flash from the reverse shock within minutes after the GRB. In contrast, other optical afterglows, such as those of GRB 990123, GRB 021211, GRB 060111B, GRB 060117, GRB 061126, and recently GRB 080319B, show a steep-to-flat transition within first 103 s typical of a rapidly evolving reverse + forward shock combination. We review the presence and absence of the reverse shock components in optical afterglows and discuss the implications for the standard model and the magnetization of the fireball. We show that the previously predicted optical flashes are likely to occur at lower wavelengths, perhaps as low as radio wavelengths and, by using the case of GRB 061126 we show that the magnetic energy density in the ejecta, expressed as a fraction of the equipartion value, is a key physical parameter.

Optical Flashes and Very Early Afterglows in Wind Environments

The interaction of a relativistic fireball with its ambient medium is described through two shocks: a reverse shock that propagates into the fireball, and a forward shock that propagates into the medium. The observed optical flash of GRB 990123 has been considered to be the emission from such a reverse shock. The observational properties of afterglows suggest that the progenitors of some GRBs m...

GRB 990123 a unique optical flash ?

GRB 990123 was a long, complex gamma-ray burst accompanied by an extremely bright optical flash. We find different constraints on the bulk Lorentz of this burst to be consistent with the speculation that the optical light is emission from the reverse shock component of the external shock. Motivated by this currently favoured idea, we compute the prompt reverse shock emission to be expected for ...

The GRB early optical flashes from internal shocks: application to GRB990123, GRB041219a and GRB060111b

With the successful launch of the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, it is widely expected that the prompt optical flashes like GRB990123 would be easily detected. However, the observations show that for a number of GRBs no early optical flash has been detected, which indicates that the reverse shock emission must be suppressed. Here we explore the possibility that the optical flash may arise from...

Emission Processes of High Energy Gamma Rays from Gamma-ray Bursts

Synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in the reverse shocks of gammaray bursts is suggested to be responsible for the observed prompt highenergy gamma-ray emissions from several gamma-ray bursts. We find that the SSC emission from the reverse shocks dominates over other emission processes in energy bands from tens of MeV to tens of GeV, for a wide range of shock parameters. This model is favor...

On the existence of a reverse shock in magnetized GRB ejecta

The role of magnetic fields in gamma-ray burst (GRB) flows remains controversial. The study of the early afterglow phases and, in particular, of the reverse shock dynamics and associated emission offers a promising probe of the magnetization of the ejecta. In this paper, we derive the conditions for the existence of a reverse shock in arbitrarily magnetized ejecta that decelerate and interact w...
